Gaza Strip: Some 25,000 Sick and Wounded Stranded Due to Border Closure

A fortnight ago, the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor warned that more than 11,000 wounded are stranded in the territory with no possibility of receiving medical care abroad, as well as 10,000 cancer patients and 2,000 others with various ailments.

On Friday, medical sources warned that some 25,000 sick and wounded Palestinians are waiting today for treatment outside the besieged Gaza Strip.

The territory’s health authorities in a statement criticized the month-long closure of the Rafah crossing, which borders Egypt.

In early May, the Israeli army occupied the vital crossing, which for the previous seven months had been Gaza’s only window to the world, allowing food, fuel and medicine to enter, while evacuating the wounded and sick.

By blockading the area, “Israel tightened its grip by imposing a crippling siege on Gaza, isolating it from the outside world and causing the deaths of dozens of wounded and sick,” the NGO criticized.

Days earlier, the director general of the Government Media Office in Gaza, Ismail al-Thawabta, also warned of the danger posed by the closure of Rafah to thousands of wounded and sick.

Al-Thawabta stressed that the territory’s health system collapsed due to eight months of attacks from the territory.
